Who Will Be The Named The Greatest Scot?

The people have triumphed over the experts in the quest to find the Greatest Scot who will be named in a special St Andrew's Day TV show tonight.

A top panel picked a short list of 30 names. But Record readers and STV viewers were asked to select a further five.
And the Top Ten, revealed today after a public vote, contains three of the People's Choice candidates - previously ignored by the expert panel. The trio short-listed by ordinary folk are Doctor Who actor David Tennant, singer Alex Harvey and founder of the Boys' Brigade, Sir William Alexander Smith.
They are up against some of the biggest names in Scottish history and the remaining seven names in the final 10 are:

Representing Leaders & Thinkers - William Wallace and Robert The Bruce.
Representing Arts & Entertainment - Robert Burns and Billy Connolly.
Representing Sport - Jock Stein.
Representing Inventors & Entrepreneurs - Andrew Carnegie.
Representing Science & Engineers - Sir Alexander Fleming.
The final 10 were selected after a week-long series of special STV shows earlier this month, as part of the Year of Homecoming 2009.
Voting has now closed and the countdown to naming the Greatest Scot takes place from 8pm, hosted by Stephen Jardine.
The winner will be marked with apiece of contemporary art by a Scottish artist, which will be donated to the nation.
Culture minister Mike Russell said: "With such an impressive shortlist, I look forward to hearing the viewers' choice.

"How fitting the winner will be announced on St Andrew's Day, our national day and a time to celebrate Scotland and its people."

THE FINAL TEN:

BILLY CONOLLY

Scotland's most famous comedian. Born November 24, 1942, in Glasgow, he left school at 15. In 1974, his Solo Concert album sparked protests over a rowdy routine describing the Last Supper as if it had taken place in Glasgow. He still does stand-up tours.

JOCK STEIN

The great Celtic boss who created the 1967 Lisbon Lions. Born in 1922, after leaving school at 14, he became a miner. He later became Scotland boss and died of a heart attack at Cardiff in 1985, just after his team won a World Cup play-off place.

WILLIAM WALLACE

ANDREW CARNEGIE

Born in 1835, the industrialist led the expansion of the US steel industry in the 19th century. He had a fortune of $100billion and spent the last 18 years of his life until 1919 giving it away, funding Carnegie Hall in New York, theatres, libraries, public parks, and schools.

Who On Who?

In an exclusive interview for BBC Radio 2, actor David Tennant talks to Doctor Who executive producer and show-runner Russell T Davies in a special programme broadcast just days before the Time Lord's latest regeneration.

Who On Who? marks the end of an era in the history of Doctor Who. In this programme Russell reveals whether he will write for the show in the future and his feelings about his successor on the series Steven Moffat. Russell also reveals the influences behind Doctor Who and why the success of the revamped series took the cast and creative team behind it by surprise.
He also reveals that he declined the BBC's original request for a series about a young Doctor studying at the Time Lord Academy. David Tennant also asks about Russell's plans for the future. They discuss why it's the right time for them both to leave the series and reveal that they made the decision to leave at roughly the same time.
"It just made sense and it's continued to make sense with hindsight," says Russell T Davies. "There's not been one moment where I've thought we've done the wrong thing."
David Tennant agrees: "It feels like we've had the right amount of time to tell a great story."
In a programme featuring clips from the last five years of one of the BBC's most successful dramas, the pair also consider how the television industry has changed in that time and the ever-changing nature of the Saturday night television schedule.
Presenter/David Tennant, Producer/Malcolm Prince

Who On Who? will air on 29th December 2009 at 17:00pm - 18:00pm on Radio 2.

David Interviewed For Reader's Digest

Press Release:
David Tennant has admitted he has “nothing to say” to new Time Lord, Matt Smith.

Tennant told Reader’s Digest, in an exclusive interview for the December issue, that he’d spoken to his successor several times “but there’s nothing to say. I think we both thought we’d be able to exchange lots of ideas. But actually it’s none of my business how Matt does it and nothing I say can really help him.”
Talking about his final foray as the Doctor in this year’s Christmas special, Tennant says “This year we’ve done something different. It is still set in Christmas, but it’s perhaps not got quite as much, er…Christmas cheer as before.” Tennant adds that come Christmas Day he’ll be watching his own send off. “Just to enjoy the moment. It’s my last Doctor Who – it will be nice to witness that.”
Tennant is now the proud possessor of his own sonic screwdriver, the Doctor’s signature gizmo. “I have one of the real things! I’ve only once used it to impress a child. It was a charity thing but it was quite cool. He was only about five, so it was a nice, wide-eyed moment.”
While he “doesn’t have any regrets” about leaving the iconic series Tennant is prepared for the inevitable “pangs of jealousy” once he’s handed over the Doctor’s mantle.
But Tennant fans shouldn’t think he’ll be resting on his laurels.
Hinting at possible future plans, Tennant reveals that as a child he loved Marvel’s The Avenger’s, a comic about a team of crime-fighting superheroes. “It’s yet to be made into a film, although I think there are rumblings. I’d be quite happy to be involved.” Indeed the film is in pre-production, with Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson already signed on.
David Tennant, superhero? Fans would say he’s played that role already.

· The full piece will feature in the December issue of Reader’s Digest on newsstands on 26 November.

David Thanks Headway's Volunteers

David is featured in Headway's Annual Review thanking all the wonderful volunteers who help the charity:

Volunteers play a vital role in Headway Essex, bringing many qualities and skills which really enrich the organisation.
They work in the Day Centre and are involved in many different activities, including computer skills training, adult basic education, cooking, driving, one to one project work and gardening. There are volunteers within the Community Support Service, giving talks to schools, making tea and lending a listening ear. There are volunteers working in the fundraising office, helping with the administration, answering the telephone, supporting and running events and counting collection boxes!
The Headway Board Of Trustees is made up of volunteers and they are responsible for ensuring that the charity is run legally and efficiently. Their skills sets are wide reaching covering many different disciplines such as Law, Finance, Health, Business, Social Care and Education. Carers and people with brain injury are also represented on the Board by volunteers.
I have seen first hand the fanstastic care that Headway provides for people with brain injuries and am proud to be associated with such a hardworking and worthwhile organisation.
This year a total of 7190 hours have been dedicated to Headway by it's dedicated volunteer team - what would Headway do without them?
I would like to give m heartfelt thanks to all who give up their time to Headway and to those in the community who fundraise to ensure that the Headway services for people living with brain injury and their families continue to make a difference.

If you would like to help Headway Essex then perhaps you'd like to purchase one of the cards that David signed for them.. and if you already have one why not get one for a friend for unique Christmas gift that will also really make a difference...

UK Fans : Click here to download the order form. You must print the order form, complete it and send it with a cheque made payable to Headway Essex. Each card requires a minimum donation of £20:00 plus £1:00 Postage. When you have done that send the form and your cheque to: Headway Essex, 58b Head Street, Colchester, Essex, CO1 1PB

David To Guest On Catherine Tate Christmas Special

On ITV1’s This Morning on 23 November, Ben Miller of Armstrong (Sarah Jane Adventures) & Miller let slip that David Tennant plays one of the ghosts in Catherine Tate’s upcoming Christmas Special. He added that David plays the role in the style of Russell Brand.

That takes David’s tally of known Christmas TV appearances up to 6 (Doctor Who/Catherine Tate Show/Hamlet/Never Mind the Buzzcocks/CBeebies/Alan Carr: Chatty Man) and he’ll also dominate the cinema with the release of St Trinian’s 2 plus no doubt a myriad of TV and radio interviews in the lead up to the regeneration.

Many thanks to Dominic May for the above. You can read Dominic's monthly column, Beyond The TARDIS, in Doctor Who Magazine.

The BBC Press Office has the following details on the show:

Catherine Tate - Nan's Christmas Carol

Nan is the star of this year's seasonal special from Catherine Tate.

The festive show sees Nan's acid-tongued insults catch up with her when the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future, along with a dead husband, pay an unexpected visit, in this comic re-telling of Charles Dickens's tale A Christmas Carol.
Is it too late for Nan to swap her Scrooge-like misery for some seasonal goodwill?
The Christmas special sees Mathew Horne return as Nan's grandson, Jamie, and features appearances from special guests including Ben Miller and Only Fools And Horses actor Roger Lloyd Pack.

Edit: David will also be appearing on Qi

The Writers Tale - The Final Chapter

EXCITING NEWS! BBC Books has announced the forthcoming publication of Doctor Who: The Writer’s Tale: The Final Chapter by Russell T Davies and Benjamin Cook. It will be published in paperback on 14 January 2010 (with a RRP £16.99). The cover is pictured above, and features David Tennant as the Tenth Doctor, Russell T Davies, and John Simm as the Master.

For this new and thoroughly updated edition of The Writer’s Tale, Russell T Davies and Benjamin Cook expand their in-depth discussion of the creative life of Doctor Who to cover Russell’s final year as Head Writer and Executive Producer of the show. Candid and witty insights abound throughout two years’ worth of correspondence, covering David Tennant’s last episodes as the Doctor and the legacy that Russell and David leave behind as a new era of Doctor Who begins. This edition will also include new, never-before-published photos from behind the scenes of David Tennant’s final adventures.
With over 300 pages of new material (that’s over 130,000 words, spread across 13 brand new chapters!), and taking in events from the entire five years since the show’s return in 2005, The Writer’s Tale: The Final Chapter will be the most comprehensive - and personal - account of Doctor Who ever published.
The original The Writer’s Tale was first published in September 2008, to critical acclaim. Boyd Hilton of Heat magazine described the book as “a funny, revealing insight into the workings of the genius who puts the show together”. Veronica Horwell of The Guardian said: “It’s the Doctor Who Annual for adults, and it’s not nearly enough, should have been 1,001 pages, because Davies doesn’t need to be writing fiction to be a storyteller. He’s the Scheherazade of Cardiff Bay.”
Albert DePetrillo, Editorial Director at BBC Books, commented: “Russell and Ben’s book is the ultimate behind-the-scenes account of Doctor Who, and a brilliant piece of writing, a book about drama that reads like great drama. I think fans will really respond to this new edition – the generous amount of new material brings the story bang up to date, and provides closure to the adventure Russell and Ben started two years ago.”

But when the Doctor activates a mysterious alien artefact the US army escorts him to Area 51 – also known as “Dreamland”. Take The Climate Challenge Game

David Tennant Takes His Seat

David is featured in the latest RSC Newsletter supporting their 'Take Your Seat' campaign.

You can find out more about it below:

Actor, David Tennant, lent his support to the Transforming our Theatres Appeal when he visited the site of the new theatre, the first time since performing Hamlet at The Courtyard Theatre last year. Following a tour of the new buildings, David took his seat in the main auditorium, which is currently under construction, to raise awareness of the Take a Seat appeal.
Over 500 seats have already been named in the auditorium, some for a favourite actor, director or to mark an anniversary, for an individual or to commemorate somebody's life. Actors who have already had a seat named after them include David Suchet, John Thaw, Ian Richardson and Dame Peggy Ashcroft, so there's plenty of opportunity for people to name a seat after a favourite actor.

The transformation of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre is due for completion at the end of 2010 at a cost of £112.8 million. There is still £10 million left to raise and there are a number of different ways that the public can contribute, from dropping their spare change in collection buckets to sponsoring a brick online.
Caroline Jones, Director of Development, said,
'We've been overwhelmed with support for the project. Over 7,000 people from 43 different countries have made donations towards the re-building of our theatres in Stratford-upon-Avon. People haven given to the appeal for lots of different reasons, often it's because of the important role that the RSC has played in their lives and now they're pleased to be able to give something back.
'We still have some way to go. Raising money in the current economic climate is tough but I'm confident that, with our track record of success and the excitement surrounding this project, we will reach our target. Naming a Seat in the new auditorium is a way to contribute vital funds to the project, as well as creating a strong association with the Company and our future. David's support for the seat appeal means a lot to us.'

Find out how to support the appeal here.

The BBC Press Office have released the following details:
David Tennant, Georgia Moffett, David Warner, Stuart Milligan and Clark Peters are among the roll call of talent appearing in the new, animated Doctor Who special, Dreamland, set in the infamous alien hotspot Roswell and described by writer Phil Ford as "Doctor Who meets a Fifties monster B-movie".

Dry Springs, Nevada, 1958. During a visit to a local diner, the Doctor befriends a young waitress, Cassie, and her friend Jimmy. When he stumbles across a strange alien artefact, the Doctor is led to the mysterious Area 51 in Roswell, also known as Dreamland, the most secret base in the USA. There, he has a dark encounter with the sinister Colonel Stark.
So begins a momentous mission for the Doctor who, with the help of his new companions and Jimmy's grandfather, Night Eagle, sets out to rescue the stranded alien, Rivesh Mantilax, and his wife, Saruba Valek, from the threat of the ruthless Viperox, led by Lord Azlok, and the clutches of the American military.

Hamlet Preview

BBC Two have uploaded a very exciting preview video of Hamlet here.

Press release follows:
The Royal Shakespeare Company's award-winning production of Hamlet, directed by RSC Chief Associate Director Gregory Doran, stars David Tennant in the title role.

This screen version of Shakespeare's great tragedy retains the quality and tone of the critically-acclaimed stage production but was filmed on location. All key original members of the cast, including Patrick Stewart as Claudius, star in this special 180-minute production, alongside the same creative team. The film is directed by Gregory Doran and designed by Robert Jones, who also designed the stage production. Chris Seager is Director of Photography and the producers are John Wyver and Seb Grant.
To support this new film of Hamlet, a rich online BBC website is being created in collaboration with the RSC, featuring behind-the-scenes stills and footage; specially-shot interviews with the actors talking about their characters and their approach to the play; interviews with the director and other key backstage personnel; and a comprehensive range of links through to the full depth of BBC Learning's content on Shakespeare and RSC Education's content on Shakespeare in performance.
