RSC Appeal Update

The RSC have sent an update on their Transform Our Theatres Appeal, which we have been helping to contribute to with our Seat For David Campaign.

They say:
£5.5m left to raise to reach Campaign goal of £112.8m
The fundraising campaign to Transform our Theatres steps up in its final year. Having received three significant gifts totaling £3.6m as well as further funds through our ongoing successful Public Appeal, the RSC has raised a total of £107.3m. With one year to go before the Campaign will close, we must push on with our fundraising and appeal to more people to help us raise the final £5.5m. With the help of some RSC Alumni we have created a trailer We're Coming Home to highlight the urgency and invite people to play their part in reaching our final goal.
Watch the new trailer

More info on the Transforming Theatres Appeal is below:
Actor David Tennant lent his support to the Transforming our Theatres Appeal when he visited the site of the new theatre, the first time since performing Hamlet at The Courtyard Theatre last year. Following a tour of the new buildings, David took his seat in the main auditorium, which is currently under construction, to raise awareness of the Take a Seat appeal.
Over 500 seats have already been named in the auditorium, some for a favourite actor, director or to mark an anniversary, for an individual or to commemorate somebody’s life. Actors who have already had a seat named after them include David Suchet, John Thaw, Ian Richardson and Dame Peggy Ashcroft, so there’s plenty of opportunity for people to name a seat after a favourite actor.
The transformation of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre is due for completion at the end of 2010 at a cost of £112.8 million. There is still £10 million left to raise and there are a number of different ways that the public can contribute, from dropping their spare change in collection buckets to sponsoring a brick online.
Caroline Jones, Director of Development, said:
‘We’ve been overwhelmed with support for the project. Over 7,000 people from 43 different countries have made donations towards the re-building of our theatres in Stratford-upon-Avon. People haven given to the appeal for lots of different reasons, often it’s because of the important role that the RSC has played in their lives and now they’re pleased to be able to give something back.
‘We still have some way to go. Raising money in the current economic climate is tough but I’m confident that, with our track record of success and the excitement surrounding this project, we will reach our target. Naming a Seat in the new auditorium is a way to contribute vital funds to the project, as well as creating a strong association with the Company and our future. David’s support for the seat appeal means a lot to us.’

Something is transforming soldiers into monstrous beetles, and she could be the next victim. Meanwhile, the Doctor steals a motorbike and stages a jailbreak. Well, how hard can it be to find the TARDIS, rescue Donna, and negotiate a peace? But that's before the arrival of a brutal and remorseless mechanical exterminator, bent on wiping out the insects. It may be that nothing can stop it, because this robot's solution for the infestation is very simple: kill everything. Featuring the Doctor and Donna, as played by David Tennant and Catherine Tate in the hit series from BBC Television, this story has been written specially for audio, and is read by David Tennant.

Thanks to The Telegraph.

Headway Essex Update

We know that there is a lot of interest from overseas fans in purchasing the fantastic merchandise that David has designed for Headway Essex.
Headway Essex would like to let all David’s fans know how much they value their support. However, selling their wonderful new merchandise overseas is not as straightforward as some may think. There is a lot of work going on behind the scenes at Headway Essex to resolve this, and they will find a solution to the complexities of Customs & Excise & VAT regulations, and will be setting up an appropriate and secure payment system and related terms & conditions in due course. Many large UK charities DO NOT sell merchandise overseas, but even though Headway Essex are a small charity they are working hard not to disappoint David’s fans who live overseas. Thank you for your patience with this and we will let you know as soon as there is any further news. :)

In the meantime fans from the UK can place orders here.

Brown Backs David As The Best Doctor

The new issue of the Radio Times has an interview with the Prime Minister Gordon Brown in which he admits that he thinks that David is the best actor to portray the role of the Doctor in Doctor Who:

John Pertwee, Tom Baker, David Tennant or Matt Smith?
“I think you know what I’m going to say here. Yes. David Tennant is the best.”

He also goes on to show a preference for Hamlet because of David's version of the part:

Hamlet, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Romeo and Juliet?
“Hamlet [with David Tennant]. I saw it recently.”

You can read the full interview with Gordon Brown in the Radio Times which is on sale now.

Hamlet On PBS: Preview Video

As we previously reported, Hamlet will be airing on PBS' Great Performances on Wednesday 28th April at 8:00pm EST It had also been confirmed that the entire film will also be available to watch on their website.

PBS have now released further details and a preview video for fans to view here.

Shakespeare’s immortal “To be, or not to be” takes on a whole new meaning (and medium) as classical stage and screen actors David Tennant and (recently-knighted) Sir Patrick Stewart reprise their roles for a modern-dress, film-for-television adaptation of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s (RSC) 2008 stage production of Hamlet. The production will be presented on PBS by the Great Performances series on Wednesday, April 28, 2010, at 8 p.m. EST (check local listings). Immediately following the broadcast, the film will be available online in its entirety on the Great Performances Web site.

Hamlet aired in the UK on Boxing Day at Christmastime 2009, and more than 900,000 viewers tuned in for the BBC broadcast. In an article in The Observer, Britain’s Prime Minister Gordon Brown wrote: “Like many people, I had my love of Shakespeare reawakened by David Tennant’s TV portrayal of Hamlet over Christmas.”
Best known for his performance in the title role of the popular British TV series Doctor Who since 2005, Tennant made his debut in October as the host of MASTERPIECE CONTEMPORARY on PBS. His many other credits include his recent portrayal of Barty Crouch Junior in the big-screen blockbuster Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Tennant has also received numerous awards from the theatre community for his lead roles in several Shakespearean productions and other classic plays.
Veteran stage and screen actor Sir Patrick Stewart reprises his 2009 Laurence Olivier Award-winning role of Claudius in the screen version, which is directed by Gregory Doran, who also returns to reprise his stage direction of the production. Co-produced by Illuminations Television and the RSC for the BBC, in association with Thirteen for WNET.ORG and NHK, the adaptation recreates the tone and atmosphere of the stage production in a film-style interpretation shot in HD on location at St. Joseph’s College in Mill Hill, London. The production is produced for television by John Wyver and Sebastian Grant.
