Playing The Dane
The last few years have seen a glut of high-profile Hamlets in the British theatre, culminating recently with Rory Kinnear at the National Theatre in London and John Simm at Sheffield Crucible.
Michael Sheen, who is due to play the role at the Young Vic in 2011, asks why Shakespeare's play remains very much the thing for 21st century audiences.
He considers the rich archive of Hamlets from the theatre, cinema and radio archives, starting with Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree in 1908 and journeying to the present-day, taking in the interpretations of John Gielgud, Laurence Olivier, Richard Burton, Jonathan Pryce, Kenneth Branagh and David Tennant, as well as female Hamlets, Sarah Bernhardt and Frances de la Tour.
Michael explores the challenges of a role that has become a rite-of-passage for leading actors, arguing that Hamlet is the most dangerous play that exists, but that our culture has made it safe.
He examines the changing political, social and psychological interpretations of the role that holds a mirror up to history, from the Edwardian stage through Freud, Modernism and two World Wars, to Thatcherism and New Labour.
Michael is joined by other famous Hamlets, who reflect on the challenges of bringing something fresh and unexpected to some of the most famous lines in English literature.

2 Minute Silence
David appears in the video for the British Legion's new charity single. They are aiming to boost funds by releasing a fund-raising single - of silence.
The novel idea includes a silent single and video with no music, just occasional background noise.
Watch the video below:
The legion hopes the release will help it beat last year's record-breaking appeal total of just under £35m.
Legion spokesman Liam Maguire is optimistic that the single will galvanise people into donating.
He said: "Where have you seen the prime minister and the lead singer of Iron Maiden in the same music video together?
"The reaction on Facebook has been amazing; we've had over 3,500 people sign up in the last 24 hours, so we're hoping the reaction is just going to be huge."
The Royal British Legion, the UK's biggest forces charity, has set a target of £36m for this year's appeal, helped by the "silent" single which it is hoping will get to the number one slot in the charts in time for Remembrance Sunday.
Extra staff have been taken on at a factory in south-west London where volunteers and former service personnel make thousands of poppy wreaths, crosses and posies by hand.

Single Father Final Episode Synopsis

Sarah and Dave have fallen in love but, while Dave excitedly makes plans for their future together, a cautious Sarah fears that they're rushing things.
Dave is furious after discovering that Stuart told Lucy about the forthcoming inquiry into her mother's death. And, to make matters worse, both Lucy and Ewan plan to attend – against Dave's wishes.
At the court, Anna isn't impressed to see the kids there, making it clear that she feels it's inappropriate. After Dave is forced to watch CCTV footage showing the moment Rita died, the painful process leads him to question his relationship with Sarah.
Later, an insensitive Michelle demands to know what their daughter Tanya will get out of it. But money is the last thing on Dave's mind. There's another complication when Stuart announces plans to start the adoption process for Lucy.
Elsewhere, Matt offers Sarah everything she's ever wanted – marriage, kids and commitment – but she's not interested. Suspicious about their sudden split, Matt is convinced there's someone else involved and asks her outright about Dave. Sarah's silence speaks volumes.
Matt goes to confront his love rival at the studio but meets a flirtatious Tanya instead. Seizing an opportunity for revenge, he sleeps with her before revealing all about Dave and Sarah's relationship.
Later, a furious Tanya arrives at Dave's house and, in front of the children and Sarah, tells everyone about their father's secret relationship. The kids – especially Lucy – react badly. Emotionally torn, Dave asks Sarah to leave, choosing to devote himself to his family instead.
Weeks later, relationship advice comes from an unlikely source as Anna persuades a lonely Dave to rekindle his romance with Sarah – he's not the only one who misses her, the kids do too.
Unable to find Sarah, Dave attends the school's end-of-term assembly but is stunned to hear the headmaster announce Sarah's resignation. Convinced he's lost his new love for good, the children and Dave search for Sarah before it's too late...
Dave is played by David Tennant, Sarah by Suranne Jones, Lucy by Natasha Watson, Stuart by Rupert Graves, Evie by Millie Innes, Ewan by Robert Dickson, Michelle by Jenni Keenan Green, Tanya by Sophie Kennedy Clark, Matt by Warren Brown and Anna by Neve McIntosh.
Single Father is simulcast on the BBC HD channel – the BBC's High Definition channel, available through Freesat 108, Freeview 50, Sky 143 and Virgin 108.

Behind The Scenes Of Single Father

With just five weeks until filming was due to start, writer Mick Ford has a problem: there was no cast, no director, and he still had to finish the scripts.
A bit of a challenge, since we had no producer, no director, no cast, no locations and no scripts for episodes three and four. There was going to be one director for all four hours, with no gap between blocks one and two, so those scripts had to be done by the read-through - in four weeks - and there were revisions needed for parts one and two.
Executive producer Nicola Shindler and I had some interesting conversations around that time. We’d become very fond of the project and didn’t want to mess it up because there wasn’t enough time to prep it and write it. And this was a tricky piece, with young children in so many scenes. If we couldn’t create a believable family and we weren’t ready…
An old caution started ringing in my ears: “If there’s one thing worse than not having your script done, it’s having your script done.”
Nicola insisted on one more week - and got it. I felt quite calm suddenly, perhaps because I’d known the characters for five years, but also because I instantly discovered that I spend most of my writing time weighing up choices and expanding options. My deliberation went straight out of the window, and prevarication with it. It was liberating: I made decisions, acted on them, wrote the two scripts in the allotted time, and was happy with them. I had to do loads of rewrites but the story was playing itself out and the structure was sound. I’d reached the end.
The first idea for the series came on a visit to Deal in Kent, where I heard about a bandsman who was killed in the bombing of the Royal Marines’ barracks back in 1989.
At the time, this bandsman’s wife was working in the café at the end of their bleak pier and, because the wind was blowing off the sea, no one heard the blast. At the exact moment her husband died, for no apparent reason, she apparently blurted out: “I love you too!” She then felt an intense sense of warmth and wellbeing.
That story set me off. What we’ve ended up with has nothing to do with bandsmen or bombings, and it’s set in Glasgow, not Deal. It’s about the “I love you too” that contains everything.
Single Father was the first project I pitched after three years on ITV’s William And Mary. At pitch stage, we made Dave, the single father, a photographer and came up with the shoots he could do during the series.
What’s interesting is that as the project tried to find its home, stories of visiting characters, at the bequest of the broadcasters, began to melt away until they disappeared altogether, leaving us with a completely uncamouflaged relationship drama.
There were sometimes four children under the age of 11 in a scene, plus a 15-year-old, all with different licence limits and all interacting with each other and adults. I obviously had to keep the work restrictions in mind - but even so, I knew I was giving them scheduling nightmares and a fast, two-camera shooting style evolved.
Prior to filming, I remember talking about how the adult actors would have to steer the scenes when the kids lost their way, because they had a lot of intricate dialogue.
The casting videos looked promising, but it was diffi cult to tell what would happen when they were with other actors. How would they react to being Doctor Who’s children? I needn’t have worried. The children, from start to finish, are brilliant. Not only are they word-perfect, but they don’t act, they’re just the kids to whom this terrible thing happens: they lose their mum.
I know from my acting days that the best way to be good is to work opposite good people - and they defi nitely had that advantage. David is immaculate on set; a rare combination of focus, enthusiasm and perfect pitch during the emotional content of a scene. The children couldn’t help but pick that up. There are moments of family life captured during the four hours that are a joy to watch, and make me glad we’ve told this story every time I see them.
My tricks of the trade
- Get them to let you see daily rushes and don’t be put off. Watch the storytelling: you can help, but don’t be a pain in the neck
- Stack up your story from the top. Life is going on, heading in a definite direction, it’s unstoppable - and you’re about to derail it
- If a scene won’t write, it’s not right. Find out what’s wrong
- Before you agree to cutting that insignificant scene, think about why you put it in there
- Work with nice people who are talented.
SINGLE FATHER DOCTOR WHO’S CHILDREN
Peter Gallagher, Producer
My first thought on reading the scripts was how brilliant they were. My second thought: there are children in nearly every scene, how are we going to film this?
The child licensing laws in Scotland are the strictest in the UK.
We would be allowed only a minimal number of working hours with each child on any one day. We looked at editing the scripts to reduce the number of scenes with children, but they were crucial to every scene.
The challenge was to find a style and method of working that would allow us to film quickly while ensuring natural, spontaneous performances from the children. We decided to shoot, as much as possible, in story order, so the young cast could feel their way through the scripts.
We shot two cameras at all times; sometimes three. We needed to shoot on as lightweight and flexible a system as we could, so we opted for HD camcorders, which avoided trailing cables and an excess of monitors. We kept lighting minimal, with small lighting units, and the house was pre-lit where possible.
The coverage was not going to be conventional. We didn’t ask the children to hit marks or repeat takes for technical reasons. After a simple walkthrough, we shot straight away, allowing the cast to develop their performance from take to take. The pressure was really on the camera and sound teams to capture the action as it developed.
Keeping the children interested was a challenge. We avoided having them on set a moment longer than necessary so it remained an exciting place for them to be.
My third thought on reading the scripts: they have a dog… but that’s another story.
Peter Gallagher’s previous credits include: The 39 Steps, Ae Fond Kiss, The Flying Scotsman and Ultraviolet.

Celebrity Autobiography Update

David will be appearing on stage in Celebrity Autobiography at the Leicester Square Theatre again tonight. He was the surprise guest in New York transfer Celebrity Autobiography, in which actors and comedians read absurd, pretentious paragraphs from other people’s books.
The Scottish star was being heart-throb David Cassidy spilling the lurid beans on his acting career. Tennant, appearing tonight too, got more wolf-whistles than the rest of the cast combined as he sauntered on, unshaven and sporting a tight jacket, vintage T-shirt and knowing smirk.
After his aforementioned Cassidy monologue he returned with ‘N Sync’s paper-thin opus and joined the team for a mass read-in of Britney Spear’s meisterwork, Crossroads Diary, revelling in the painful banality of the prose: “I ate tuna salad for lunch, then napped.”
The rest of the cast was wickedly good too. Doon Mac-Kichan delivered Mr T’s dumbest lines with a wink. Sally Phillips deadpanned from one of Katie Price’s torrid works which contrasted neatly with James Lance’s account of Peter Andre’s penchant for Trivial Pursuit. Michael Urie, Ugly Betty’s camp PA, unpicked erotic advice from Tommy Lee and Tiger Woods’ pre-scandal tips on ball technique took on whole new meanings.
For the finale the ensemble combined chapters from books by Elizabeth Taylor and assorted spouses. Tennant was a terrifically libidinous Richard Burton, oozing Welsh testosterone as he grasped the phallic microphone. An irreverent, ego-debunking hit, but maybe after this star cameo ends the others should unearth his last Dr Who annual.

Single Father - Episode 3 Synopsis
The BBC Press Office have released the synopsis for the third episode of Single Father. This will air on Sunday 24th October at 9pm:After their night of passion, Dave and Sarah are on tenterhooks, worried about what Evie saw, as Mick Ford's touching yet humorous drama about finding love after heartbreak continues. To their dismay, Evie's not giving anything away.
Desperate to see Sarah again, Dave arranges for the kids to go to a football match. When he calls to invite her, Matt answers and a flustered Dave ends up inviting them both along. It proves excruciating as Evie, the ticking time bomb, runs happily between Dave, Sarah and Matt.
Meanwhile, Anna doesn't help matters by revealing to Lucy that Dave has found her father. Incredibly excited by the news, Lucy is furious when a protective Dave won't give her Stuart's number.
Later, Dave meets up with Stuart and his glamorous wife and their children. In contrast to Dave's chaotic family life, Stuart lives in a huge, well-ordered house in Edinburgh.
As the two men talk, Stuart asks if the police offered Dave compensation for Rita's death. When Dave explains Robin is dealing with this, Stuart, a lawyer himself, offers to take on the case – believing he can better the claim.
Dave talks it through with Robin who thinks it's a good idea and, now in serious financial trouble, Dave reluctantly accepts Stuart's offer. But Anna is furious at Robin for giving up the compensation case and throws him out.
Recent revelations about Rita have made Dave paranoid and he obsesses over her diaries, cross-referencing and checking them alongside Paul, Ewan and Evie's birthdays – convinced Rita has lied about their paternity.
Dave takes Lucy to Edinburgh to spend time with Stuart. While there, Sarah surprises him with a visit to the city and the two spend the afternoon at a hotel together. Dave opens up about his paternity fears but a vulnerable Sarah reacts badly to his honesty, questioning whether she's being used as revenge against Rita's memory. Dave pursues Sarah, realising he's fallen in love with her and she tells him the only way they can move forward together is for him to get a paternity test.
Back home, a desperate Matt offers Sarah a new life away from Glasgow but is surprised when she ends their relationship.
Dave is played by David Tennant, Sarah by Suranne Jones, Evie by Millie Innes, Matt by Warren Brown, Anna by Neve McIntosh, Lucy by Natasha Watson, Stuart by Rupert Graves, Robin by Mark Heap, Paul by Chris Hegarty and Ewan by Robert Dickson.
Single Father is simulcast on the BBC HD channel – the BBC's High Definition channel, available through Freesat 108, Freeview 50, Sky 143 and Virgin 108.
