Guest Blogger: Fright Night Review

Our guest blogger this week is @TimeGeek who is from the USA and has written fans a review of her viewings (yes there have been several!) of Fright Night:
Fright Night: A Horror-Comedy Done Right. Again.
Remake. That’s a dirty word in Hollywood nowadays and one that turns off many a moviegoer, myself included. When a studio announces that they are going to remake a movie, the media and the readers groan & moan about how they will once again take a perfectly good movie and ruin it trying to recapture the glory of the original both onscreen and at the box office. In the end, it all boils down to rehashing old ideas and attempting to once again make a quick buck.
Whenever I first read about a ‘Fright Night’ remake, I was horrified (no pun intended)! This was a great movie from the 1980’s that was going to be dismembered and put back together in some bizarre way because, on a whim, someone thought it would be a good idea. I was ready to roll my eyes and yell, “NEXT!”, when I read the name David Tennant.
Now Tennant is a very intelligent man and while he may have played a silly role or two in the course of his career, he knows a meaty, challenging character when he sees one. His decision alone to take on the role of vampire slayer, Peter Vincent, in the remake of ‘Fright Night’ sold me on this film from day one.
There’s that word again - remake. It certainly does not describe the 2011 version of ‘Fright Night’ because what screenwriter Marti Noxon has managed to do here is not simply retell original screenwriter and director Tom Holland’s story but to reimagine it completely taking the basic elements of the original and whipping out one of the best scripts in Hollywood I’ve seen in years.
The story is still the same: New neighbor moves into boy’s neighborhood, people begin to disappear, he realizes his neighbor is, in fact, a vampire, nobody believes him and he must find a way to take this vampire down. The difference, this time around, is that the story is no longer linear and superficial. Yes, Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin) must come face to face with his vampire neighbor, Jerry Dandridge (Colin Farrell) in the end, but his journey there is an emotional one riddled with doubts, guilt and fear.
This time, Charley isn’t the one convinced his neighbor, Jerry, is a vampire - not initially - it’s his friend ‘Evil’ Ed Lee (Christopher Mintz-Plasse) who approaches Charley with the idea only to be mocked and turned down. And then, Evil disappears. Thus begins Charley’s quest to find out what’s really going on with his neighbor Jerry.
But the character differences hardly end there. The once reluctant, grandfatherly, late night horror show actor/vampire expert, Peter Vincent (originally played by Roddy McDowall), is now a far younger & very sexy Las Vegas illusionist and vampire expert played by David Tennant. This new Peter Vincent isn’t just fearful for the sake of it; he is downright scared to death of vampires and with good reason! Like Charley, this version of Mr. Vincent has an emotional basis to initially reject any involvement in this vampire nonsense but, eventually, also conquers his fears, doubts and guilt and emerges a true vampire slayer - sort of.
I’m not even going to bother going into detail about the film’s visuals and use of 3D because there is no way to effectively convey in writing the rush of being on a roller coaster ride that this new version of the movie will give you. It may not have the outstanding make-up and animatronic special effects the original film had but director Craig Gillespie’s cinematography and CGI/3D effects are used intelligently and tastefully proving that, in conjunction with a brilliant script, they can be used successfully to produce a damn good film!
The cast of ‘Fright Night’ is top rate. Every single actor does an amazing job with their role. Colin Farrell is just plain creepy as vampire Jerry Dandridge, Anton Yelchin conveys the teenage identity crisis Charley goes through to perfection and David Tennant manages to portray so many facets of Peter Vincent in such a short amount of time that the only phrase I can find to describe his performance in this film is acting genius.
Tennant is not only absolutely hilarious, providing the majority of the comedic relief in this film, he also delivers the deepest and most moving scene in the film without uttering a single word. While all the actors really deserve praise, it is David Tennant who really gets the opportunity to shine and put his acting abilities on display in what is, interestingly enough, one of the major roles with the least amount of screen time and earns, what I consider to be, the most outstanding performance in the film.
I could go on and on about what a fabulous film ‘Fright Night’ is both as a horror/psychological thriller and as a comedy but it would be much more fun to just see it for yourself! It is, without a doubt, the best Hollywood reimagining I have ever seen and, quite possibly, even better than Tom Holland’s original ‘Fright Night’.

Much Ado Update

It is still currently unknown whether David will be able to perform on stage as Benedick in Much Ado About Nothing at Wyndham's Theatre in London tonight. He is still suffering from illness and vocal problems.

David did test his vocals at the theatre on Tuesday but felt unable to proceed with the show, meaning he has missed both Monday and Tuesday evening's performances so far. He has also had to cancel a string of promotional interviews for his new film Fright Night, including interviews with Radio 1 and BBC Breakfast.

Get well soon David!

The BBC News site reports:

Former Doctor Who star David Tennant was forced to pull out of a West End production of Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing this week after losing his voice, it has emerged.
The actor missed two shows on Monday and Tuesday. Producers said he hoped to return to the stage on Wednesday.
Understudy Alex Beckett played Benedick opposite Catherine Tate's Beatrice in the 40-year-old's absence.
The production is due to end its sold-out run on 3 September.
Much Ado About Nothing opened at the Wyndham's theatre in June, receiving positive reviews from the critics.
In Josie Rourke's production, Shakespeare's romantic drama is transplanted from 17th Century Sicily to a sun-drenched holiday resort in the 1980s.
Scottish star Tennant has been forced to miss performances before while performing Shakespeare on the West End stage.
In 2008 a bad back forced him to pull out of a RSC staging of Hamlet at the Novello theatre for much of its London run.

David Cancels Fearne Cotton Interview

David is still unwell and having vocal problems and had to cancel his interview with Fearne Cotton on her Radio 1 show this morning. Fearne says that she hopes to have him on the show at a later date:
Big shame but David Tennant has lost his voice so can't come on my show today. We will get him back on soon though. Get better David!

David Confirmed For New BBC One Drama Love Life

The BBC Press Office have confirmed that David is to star in a new 5 part BBC Drama, Love Life.
David will star in the first story. Read below for the official press release and details on David's episode:

Award-winning writer and director Dominic Savage will return to BBC One with Love Life, a serial made through improvisation. Five universal stories explore love in the modern day and each is led by one of the following big names: David Tennant, Billie Piper, Jane Horrocks, Ashley Walters and David Morrissey.
Dominic Savage says: "I am looking to create something special that has a modern view on the age old mystery of love; something that expresses the reality of love and puts it on the screen. I am looking to explore these themes in the seaside town of Margate, with a group of incredibly talented actors who are ready to journey with me on this."
Love Life explores five powerful and overlapping love stories set in the same town. Each story looks at a different relationship and explores a different dilemma or situation. When it comes to love and relationships, there is never an easy "right answer" – telling the truth is complicated, and the conflict of desire and responsibility can be explosive.
The stories are life-affirming, visceral, provocative and compelling. Most of all they are universal. The audience will feel as torn by the situations as the characters do, and each story will provoke strong responses: did the characters do the right thing in the end? What would you have done?
Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning, says: "This is a complete first in TV drama on BBC One: a serial made through improvisation. It features some of our very best acting talent working in a way we've never seen on screen from them before, using improvisation to push the boundaries of each story, to get right to the heart of the truth."
Juliette Howell, Working Title Television, says: "I've always admired Dominic's extraordinary capacity to capture truth and humanity in his work and with the complexities of love as his subject matter, and the stellar cast he has assembled, Love Life promises to be something very special."
Writer and director Dominic Savage's work is distinctive and unusual. Each film will be semi-improvised as Dominic works through the scenarios with the actors to find truth and authenticity. He has won numerous awards for his work, including two BAFTAs for best single drama and the Edinburgh International Film Award for best new feature.
Love Life is commissoned by Ben Stephenson, Controller, BBC Drama Commissioning and Danny Cohen, Controller BBC One. The 5x30minute Working Title Television production will be executive produced by Juliette Howell for Working Title and Lucy Richer for the BBC.

The stories
Story One: Nick (David Tennant) is happily married; his wife and children are everything to him, but when his first love appears out of the blue he suddenly starts to question everything. Can they go back to what they had all those years ago? Also starring Vicky McClure as Serena.

Story Two: Holly (Billie Piper) is a young unfulfilled teacher who is in an unsatisfactory relationship with a married man. She suddenly finds herself drawn to one of her female pupils. What would happen if she were to act on these feelings?

Story Three: Sandra (Jane Horrocks) is facing the fact that her marriage has become stale over the years – when her youngest child leaves home she realises that her and her husband have little to say to one another, and besides this, he is having an affair. Then she meets someone who couldn't be more different from her, but somehow makes her feel alive again – can she throw everything up for this man, and how will her husband feel now that the shoe is on the other foot?

Story Four: Paul (Ashley Walters) has a lovely wife, a baby boy, a nice house… but it's just a bit ordinary, a bit lacking in excitement. He feels pushed out by the baby and misses the thrill of sexual attention. Then he catches sight of a girl on his way to work and feels an instant attraction – could this really be love at first sight? What happens when you act on this?

Story Five: Adrian (David Morrissey) is a divorcee who has been searching for true love. It's not been easy but he's not giving up. Still a romantic, he believes in it whole-heartedly, despite his failed marriage. Just when he thinks he might have found it, he finds that he is the victim of another obsessive love that threatens to scupper his future.

New Projects?

David's name is being linked to two new projects. At the moment we don't have any confirmation that he will definitely be involved but, fingers crossed as they sound great!
Firstly you may remember that David recently mentioned that he will be working with Dominic Savage. Dominic has a new BBC One 5 part drama called True Love and David is rumoured to be a member of the cast alongside Billie Piper, David Morrisey, Jane Horricks and Gemma Chan.
And secondly he's being linked to the BBC Film Nativity 2.

David Talks to The Guardian

David Tennant: 'My bedpost really has very few notches' – interview

He's been Casanova, Romeo and the Doctor. Just don't call David Tennant a pin-up

There's a moment in the current production of Much Ado About Nothing that I particularly love. It's not when David Tennant's Benedick makes his entrance as a sun-bronzed prat in a golf buggy, nor his Cary Grant-style rat-a-tat-tat delivery of lines such as, "I would my horse had the speed of your tongue", not even when he finally gets to kiss Catherine Tate's Beatrice. It's the encore when Tennant skips across the stage, grinning from ear to ear, and you just know there's nothing on earth he'd rather be doing. I've never seen an actor so happy in his job.
Today, Tennant, 40, looks like a teenager posing as an adult. Here he is in his skinny jeans and Beatles T-shirt, bubbling with enthusiasm, and absurdly boyish. He's obsessed with hacking, can't stop reading about it. The police, the press, the politicians all in it together – perfect conspiracy. "Rupert's just said it's the most humbling day of his life. Too fucking right. Apparently he said it like a dead fish." Has he been hacked? Well, he has his suspicions, but the stories that surprised him weren't in News International tabloids, and he's more interested in the meta-drama than any tiny role he might have played. "There's something Greek about it, isn't there?"
Tennant is still best known as the Doctor. For many he is the Doctor – geeky, manic and a little bit gorgeous. He has also romped as
Casanova, probed as DI Carlisle in the TV musical-drama Blackpool, theorised as cerebral scientist Arthur Eddington in Einstein And Eddington (stick a pair of specs on him and he's as dull as the next man), played Hamlet quite beautifully (awkward and paranoid, yet graceful) and appeared in a number of none-too-impressive movies. Perhaps that's the biggest surprise – that for all his popularity and talent, he isn't a huge film star. Maybe this will change with his first Hollywood movie. In Fright Night, a remake of the 1985 original, he plays veteran vampire hunter Peter Vincent like Russell Brand on speed. Sure, he's funny, but it's not the most challenging of roles.
In Much Ado, he is a brilliant Benedick – shallow, laddish and witty, he gradually learns how to show his love. Tennant has a wonderful way of demystifying Shakespearean verse without patronising it, mining every word for maximum humour or pathos. I tell him I loved the fact he looked so chuffed at the end. Well, what could be better, he says – acting in a great play to a sold-out audience with one of your best mates? (Tate also starred with him in
Doctor Who.) This is what makes him so likable – you don't feel there is a hidden beef, an itch of resentment that he isn't a global superstar.
It's not that he's unambitious. Anything but. Is it true he knew he wanted to be an actor when he was three years old? He laughs, embarrassed. "I know it's absurd and precocious and, of course, at three, you don't really know what that means. So I was just very fortunate that as I grew up and began to understand what that actually was, the idea developed consistently." He stops, and says actually that's not right – he did have a sense of what acting was back then. "I remember a conversation with my parents about who the people on the TV were, and learning they were actors and they acted out this story and just thinking that was the most fantastic notion, and that's what I want to do. And I remember understanding very clearly the difference between the
fantasy and reality of that, and that making it even more exciting."
Tennant was born David John McDonald and grew up with his brother and sister in a manse in Paisley, Scotland. His father Sandy was the local Church of Scotland minister. Would Sandy have liked his son to follow him into the church? "No, no, we all went different ways and that's absolutely as our parents would have had it." If anything, he says, his dad would have fancied a go at Tennant's job. "Being a minister is sort of like acting and my dad has always been very supportive. I think he had a bit of a notion for it himself. He's often said that if he'd grown up in a slightly different place, slightly different circumstances and slightly different time, it's something he might have seen himself doing." His father appeared in a non-speaking role as a footman in Doctor Who.
Young David enjoyed school and worked hard – if he hadn't gone to drama school he would probably have studied English at university. I tell him he was particularly convincing as the sober academic Eddington. Is that a part of him? He smiles. "Oh yeah, yeah, definitely, there's definitely a swot inside me."
His friend
Arabella Weir, who was his landlady when he moved to London, once said he had a "steely determination". Does he agree?
"It's funny this quote is always brought up, and I don't feel very steely." What does she mean by it? "I imagine she'd say it's about a determination of purpose, which I can't deny. Certainly, in terms of being an actor, I was very single-minded. That didn't feel 'steely' to me."
As he's talking I take out a couple of old-fashioned cassettes from my bag. "Ooooh look at them!" he squeals excitedly. "From the 1970s!" He's bouncing with delight. At times, Tennant could suffocate you with his enthusiasm.
Now he's thinking about his single-mindedness. "I guess Arabella would say I'm swotty, you see. I make sure I learn my lines… it's just we come from slightly different starting points, I guess." What's his starting point? "Fear, probably. Fear of being found out, fear of not being any good and just, you know, fear of failing."
He looks remarkably tanned for a man who's spending so much time in the theatre. How come? "Oh, this is all fake. We get spray-tanned underneath the stage once a week. I think I look vaguely jaundiced. Paisley people aren't really meant to tan. We're meant to be parchment white."

A few years ago Tennant traced his family's roots in the television series Who Do You Think You Are? It was rather sad, and moving, as he discovered that his liberal credentials weren't quite as impeccable as he'd imagined – it turned out his maternal great-grandparents had been flute-flaunting, Catholic-bating bigots back in Northern Ireland. You could see the hurt on his face as he realised his own family had championed everything he despised. "I was really shocked. It was absurd how naive I had been. Of course, two generations back, I should have realised it was going to be tribal."
Another thing that emerged in the documentary was his tendency to make a bit of a mess of things – such as when he drinks from a stream, says how fresh the water is, only to discover sheep regularly pee in it. Yes, he says proudly, "I've always been a geek and slightly awkward… slightly umm… I was never the cool kid at school."
Isn't it strange, then, that he has become a heart-throb and that women… He stops me before I'm finished. "It's absurd and ridiculous and…" He sounds anxious, defensive even. But isn't there a bit of him that wants to gloat; to tell all the kids who thought he was a nerd that he's now this babe magnet, this sex god, this…
And now he really is flushed and flustered. He wants to get the words out but they won't come. "The moment one is sort of made aware of that sort of thing it feels very… it's very hard to enjoy because it feels so absurd and unconnected to… how do you make use of it, or how do you channel it, or how do you even feel good about it because… because… you're patently aware it's not true."

Blimey. But he's not finished yet. He's determined to stumble towards an explanation of why he's neither desirable nor a conventional leading man. "I mean, it's not true because it's not to do with you, it's to do with characters you play, it's not to do with who you are, or even what you look like, and so I still find it ridiculous when I read a script that says something like 'good looking' or 'fanciable' or anything like that. I think, 'That's not my part' because I always played the weird geeky outsiders. I got cast in Romeo And Juliet in 2000 and people were saying, 'Oooh, unconventional casting.' Then I did Casanova on the telly, which was about a great lover, but that part in that programme he's not – he's a sort of puppy-dog boy."

Hold on a sec. Does the gentleman not protest too much? After all, when he played the Doctor, rarely a week passed without the red-tops suggesting he had a new girlfriend. "And we know we must believe everything we read in the paper!" he says, sardonically.

But did he not get a reputation as Mr Shagtastic? "From whoooooo?" His voice rises a good octave.

"The tabloids suggested you had been out with every woman on the Doctor Who set," I say. He howls with laughter. "Hahahahaha! I refute that heartily." He pauses. "Well, I mean I have had some girlfriends, and I did meet some of them at work you know…" Another pause. "You know, my bedpost really has very few notches compared with other actors of my erm, erm, pedigree. Hehehehehe!"

If anything, he says, he's been Mr Monogamy. "I have never really overdone it. You know, I've never had three on the go at the same time." What about two? "No. No, because I'm too racked with guilt in every corner of my life to even try to get away with something like that."

It's the old Presbyterian thing, he says, just like the work ethic. "It's all connected, isn't it – that sense that you're not worthy and therefore you have to prove your worth, and you don't get above your station."

Does he think religion shaped his character? "I'm sure it must have." He still goes to church occasionally. "There's a morality… I think there's a moral compass but whether that comes from religion or just from being a good person, and where one starts and the other begins…" So what is he? "I'm a good person, I hope. But I'm never as good as I want to be, never as nice as I want to be, never as generous as I want to be."

Tennant brings warmth and likability to most of his roles. Is it important for him to be liked in real life? "I think it's quite important. Actors often have a reputation for being ludicrous and arrogant, and I don't think either are necessary and I think because you produce work collectively it's important to be respectful and receptive, and frankly there's too many of us. It's an overcrowded profession, so there's no excuse for behaving like a twat. And I don't like people who do."

After drama college, Tennant joined the left-wing theatre company 7:84 (the name came from the 1966 statistic that 7% of the UK population owned 84% of the nation's wealth). Was it the politics that attracted him? "Not particularly, it was more that they offered me a job and straight out of drama school that's all you sort of cared about. I mean, it so happened that I agreed with what they stood for, but I would probably have taken a job even if I didn't." How would he describe himself politically? "Left-leaning." Socialist, liberal? "Both of those things." He is a Labour party supporter, did the voiceover for an election broadcast last year and has never had time for the Scottish Nationalists. "I had no great sense of nationalism when I was in Scotland, and I could never understand why the SNP were banging on about it. I was like, why do we want to become smaller? Surely we want to expand and look outward? Let's go into Europe and be one big happy family!"

Tennant is happy to talk about anything but his personal life. And when asked, he deflects with considerable skill. But however much he might resist the notion, there is one remarkable fact about his choice of partner. Five months ago, his girlfriend Georgia Moffett gave birth to their daughter. Georgia Moffett is the daughter of former Doctor Who star Peter Davison. That means Tennant's daughter will have a Doctor as both father and grandfather. How crazy is that? (There have been only 11 Doctors in the history of time travel.)

Tennant smiles. Silence.

"But it is bonkers, isn't it?" Silence.

"Did you actually go out and seek the daughter of a Doctor to mother your child?"

"That's exactly what I did, yes, and there were very few candidates available. It was a limited field." He grins.

"It is unlikely, isn't it?"

"I know, but seriously, anything I say will get picked up."

"Do you ever sit down with Peter Davison and say, 'This is weird?'"

"I'm not giving the Daily Mail a quote. I'm not doing it… Don't do this to me," he pleads. "Mmmmm, I have a very happy family life, very blessed, yeah. I understand there's an interest, and I don't want to feed it."

I give up. "OK," I say, "I'm going to let you…"

"…wriggle," he finishes.

"Am I allowed to ask if Peter Davison is a nice man?"

"Peter is a very nice man."

So we return to the movies. Is this a new stage in his career? No, he says, "I don't think that tactically. I just like to join the jobs up and hope they will be as varied and interesting as possible. So if I can do a film with DreamWorks, then come back and do a little British film, then do something in the West End, then do something for the BBC, that's great." Could Fright Night make him a movie star? "I suppose it's the first big Hollywood thing I've done and people say, is this going to be your move to Hollywood? Well, of course it's not going to be. You learn from experience that the things you think are going to change your life probably won't." He stops. "Not that I'm looking for it to be changed. I'm very happy with what I've got."

• Fright Night is released on 2 September.

David chats to Chris Evans on Radio 2

David was a guest on Chris Evans' Radio 2 Breakfast show on Friday morning
Visit Chris' page on the BBC site here to listen to their chat.
Read a transcript of their chat below thanks to Sharon Hanley from BBC Radio 2.

*Be warned that Chris does give away basically the whole plot of Fright Night! Eek! But it is extremely funny!

CHRIS EVANS/DAVID TENNANT INTERVIEW BBC RADIO 2 BREAKFAST SHOW FRIDAY 19 AUGUST 2011
8.16 – DAVID CRIED AT BEACHES DT - on the movie Beaches 'I cried at that!'
8.24 – BEING A BEATLES FAN DT: I became a Beatles fan very late in life last year. I've always liked them but it was when I was in Alberquerque making this film, Fright Night. I went to Walmart and thought I need some cds to play in this apartment they've given me and picked up Let It Be and from then became obsessed, and since then I've become like a proper full on flag-waving Beatles fan.
CE: And what about Abbey Road - have you Abbey Roaded yet?
DT: Of course, yeah, it's brilliant. What I've also got into is Beatles rock band, have you played the game?
CE: No
DT: Where you play the, well you don’t play the guitar, you're just pressing buttons on a Playstation 3 but you feel like you have this guitar and you hang it over your (shoulder), and you feel like a rock star.
8.40 - DT - I kind of believe that I introduced Owl City to Britain rather pompously. I was in America and they were playing it on the radio all the time, and I loved it and bought the CD. And I came back here and I did a bunch of radio promotion. I think it was Jo Whiley's show and she said ‘what have you been listening to?’, so I said 'this great track by Owl City' and she'd never heard of it. If I'm ahead of Jo Whiley, I couldn't be further ahead of the curve! I played that record on her show and it was number one six weeks later. So they owe me big time.
CE - I think that's a claim that can be substantiated. Did Jo play it when you went on her show?
DT - I think it was Jo's show, unless it was Fearne’s show - It was one or the other, it was one of the two….
CE - You're doing what I just did! How do you think Jo will feel about that?
DT - Well, she won't mind. I don't want it to be investigated too thoroughly incase I'm disabused of the fact that I believe it was me
FRIGHT NIGHT PLOT 8.35ish
CE – David Tennant plays a reluctant vampire slayer who is in the middle of doing an illusion show in Las Vegas, you’ve collected all your anti-vampire things becaues your parents were slain in a time gone by…
DT – ooh that’s a spoiler given away Chris!
CE - I don’t know how much to give away?
DT - I don’t think that will kill it
CE - Have I just pierced a stake through the heart of the movie?
DT – I think that’s it! Our opening weekend has just deflated. It’s over!
CE - This is the thing when you’re interviewing, you don’t know how far to go with the plot! Can you give me some ‘don’t blow it’ guidelines?
DT - You’re supposed to say ‘your character has a deep secret in his past’ not come right out with what it is! (hysterical laughter)
CE – I’m genuinely sweating. what do I ask you now? I might just play a record, I’m bailing, I’m drowning….
8.40ish - APPEARING WITH HIS TOP OFF IN HIS NEW MOVIE
CE: You are very cut [buff] in this movie
DT: I'm really not cut!
CE: You spend the first 30 minutes of your appearance, all you have on is leather jeans and some kind of crucifix and that’s about it, you're pretty cut my friend. We were all very impressed
DT: No, no, in fact the director said to me he liked the scrawny British look - 'don't dare be going to the gym'
CE: That is not scrawny
DT: Listen when you're on set with Colin Farrell and Anton Yeltchin - all proper Hollywood gym body types
CE: But that’s the whole point, you can see the work that’s been done there
DT: Whereas with me, it looks careless?
CE: No, it’s natural, let's put it that way!
DT: It’s certainly natural, yeah
CE: So nothing done at all?
DT: My appendicitis scar there for the world to see
CE: Is that what it was, was that genuine?
DT: Yeah. Did you think that was a prosthetic?
CE: Well all I thought, when I saw your torso, your tummy, the centre of your very being, I thought 'where does his food go?' If you had a midget gem you'd see the outline of it. What happens with you and food?
DT: Again in America with the craft service, there's a rolling buffet on set at all times.
CE: That’s always tough isn't it? The smell wafting over the set, alluring you…
DT: Yeah, cheeky Snickers at 3 in the morning, yeah
8.53 David talks to Chris about how he holds back his emotions when acting … “You know I do actually have a hint for that, and do you know where I got it from, Esther Rantzen. I remember her when I was a kid doing 'That’s Life' and somebody interviewed her and said ‘what do you do when you want to cry’, and she said ‘I dig my finger nails into the palm of my hand and it just stops me going and I can carry on’, and she is absolutely right! And I have done that, it can also stop you laughing at the wrong moment as well. So you just have to grow your finger nails slightly long and dig them into the palm of your hand.”
8.42 David talks about the possibility of Fright Night sequels and the clauses for sequels in his contract… “I imagine, and again I’m new to all this, but I imagine it depends on how our opening weekend goes, which starts today (in US, two weeks time in the UK). I can’t speak for everyone else, I don’t know if I’m meant to divulge that information, it’s like top secret, there were clauses yes. I’ll still be there at 75, hopefully keeping my shirt on by then. There might be another couple.”
9.14 Jo Whiley on the phone re Owl City -
CE - David claims to have brought Owl City to the UK as an import
DT - I was hoping this wasn't going to be investigated too thoroughly!
Jo Whiley - You are the saviour of new music despite what anybody might say. People think I know about bands and I kind of hear about them and get tipped off about them and they go on to great success. The truth is, I'd never heard of Coldplay until you got in touch with me. You told me to check them out. You said 'Jo, there's a band called Oasis, have you heard of them' so I played them, they became a big success'. I heard it first from you. There was a band called Owl City, they had the song 'Fireflies'. I was listening to the Breakfast Show on Radio 1 and you were guests with Fearne Cotton, and you said 'Fearne, why don't you play Owl City Fireflies' - and she did! And then you came onto my show and said 'play Owl City Fireflies'. I'd never heard of it before, I played it, I owe it all to you.
DT - I am the power behind your throne Jo
CE - He's given you the same line he gave Fearne Cotton! You're getting second hand lines from the Tennant!
JW - My point precisely! Do I sound like a woman slighted?
DT - If it works for one, you just roll it on...
DAVID REVEALS HE PREFERS THEATRE TO MOVIES CE - Gun to your head - theatre or movies… DT - Oh don't make me choose! I started in the theatre, I could always go back to it
9.14 ON THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY CE - what's the worry ? DT - Cinema going is still going up. We are in the West End at the moment, it's sold out every night. I don't think there is a lack of appetite and people are willing to pay for what they like.
