David Tennant voices the character of the young Charles Darwin.

Directed by British animation legend and Aardman co-founder Peter Lord and based on Gideon Defoe’s cult novel series, The Pirates! In An Adventure With Scientists is a delirious high-seas romp starring Hugh Grant as the luxuriantly bearded Pirate Captain, who navigates his salty crew on a perilous mission to Victorian London to aid a young Charles Darwin voiced by David Tennant.

David Tennant says: "What a joy to be part of that. You feel a little bit of a cheat to take any credit for it, but really the stars of this film are the animators. What they can make a piece of plasticine is quite remarkable.""The other day I did my last session on the film and they brought the little model of [my character] Da…

Twelfth Night Reviews

Image
There have been a number of complimentary reviews of BBC Radio 3's Twelfth Night, which starred David Tennant as Malvolio. Download an MP3 of the play here.

The Stage says:
"The play’s humour resides in the sub-plot which was here beefed up by David Tennant’s extraordinary performance as Malvolio, the punctilious servant who dreams of marriage to his employer, Olivia, which would make him a Count, hanging around in velvet lounge wear. This Malvolio was scarily sharp-tongued until, in a cruel joke, he received the letter purporting to be from Olivia, encouraging him to behave like a jackass, at which point his rasp turned into a squeak of astonishment and his simpering and smiling could be heard in his performance, all self-conscious sunshine and smirks."

The Guardian said:
"David Tennant's Malvolio was a particular delight in a version of the play that eschewed all gimmickry and instead simply showcased the brilliant language."

The Telegraph says:

Happy Birthday Shakespeare

2001 saw a one night only performance as Lysander / Flute in A Midsummer Night's Dream at the Barbican.

The BBC Media Centre issued the following press release:
Based on glimmers of truth, Believe It is the hilarious, bizarre, revealing and, most importantly, untrue celebrity radiography of Richard Wilson. Celebrity autobiographies are everywhere. Richard Wilson has always said he'd never write one. Richard, however, narrates the series, weaving in and out of dramatised scenes from his fictional life story.
He plays a heavily exaggerated version of himself: a Scots actor and national treasure, unmarried, private, passionate about politics, theatre and Manchester United - all true.
He’s a confidant of the powerful and has survived childhood poverty, a drunken father, years of fruitless grind, too much success, monstrosity, addiction, charity work, secret work for governments and fierce rivalry…

Happy 41st Birthday David Tennant!

Image
A very, very Happy Birthday to the very talented and very lovely Mr David Tennant who is 41 years young this very day!

The son of a Presbyterian minister, David Tennant was brought up in Bathgate, the post-industrial town between Edinburgh and Glasgow immortalised in a song by his favorite band, The Proclaimers. He decided to be an actor at a very young age (3 or 4) and was appearing on screen before he was even out of school. He was first talent-spotted by Scottish TV at a Saturday youth theatre club, an offshoot of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama where he later trained.
After graduating, Tennant auditioned for the groundbreaking political Scottish Theatre Group 7:84 and landed the role of Giri the Hitman in their touring production of The Resistible Rise of Arturo Uiith — his first professional part. His second job, as King Arthur in an Edinburgh production, got such a bad review it made him cry. However, things began to look up when he landed a part in the a…

Virgin Pull Their 'Doctor Who' Ad

Image
The ongoing saga of the dispute between the BBC and Virgin Media over the unauthorised display of the Doctor Who logo and other BBC programmes on a recent advert has drawn to a close. Virgin have agreed to pull the advert, starring David Tennant and Sir Richard Branson, from TV and YouTube in a gesture of goodwill.

In the advert to promote Virgin's new Collections bundles and their TiVo service David is seen browsing through his own back catalogue. The original version featured the current Doctor Who logo quite prominently and also highlighted some of David's other work with the BBC, such as Casanova.  It was thought that the problem had already been resolved when Virgin Media removed the Doctor Who logo last week. However, the BBC maintain that the advert still breaks their guidelines by giving the impression that the BBC are endorsing a third party service.

In a joint statement, the brands said: ‘Virgin Media has listened to concerns raised by BBC Worldwide about perceived c…

Watch Discovering Hamlet On Sky Arts 2 Tonight At 9.40pm

Image
David Tennant, who has played Hamlet on stage and screen, is part of an exciting new programme for Sky Arts called Discovering Hamlet.
Discovering Hamlet will air tonight at 9.40pm on Sky Arts 2 HD.
Sky Arts say:
Playing the Prince of Denmark is said to be like climbing Mount Everest, calling on brilliance, great stamina and huge vocal resources from the performer. And, like a giant theatrical magnet, the play and its title character have enticed top directors and actors from around the world to bring the drama to life for more than 400 years.

Hamlet is possibly one of the most interpreted roles in theatre history. Through some of William Shakespeare’s most famous soliloquies we watch a man stricken with grief, disgust, and anger battle with his inner demons. But his inaction for revenge is seen as both cunning and cowardly; his madness both genuine and part of a clever plan. So who is Hamlet? And why does the famously introspective character attract such keen attention in the arts …

Hire David Tennant's Hamlet Crown For Just £20 From The RSC!

Image
The crown worn by David Tennant in his critically acclaimed run as Hamlet with The Royal Shakespeare Company could be yours to hire for just £20 a day! The piece of theatrical history is up for rent by the company.

And it’s not the only prop that you can hire from them.
The RSC has 30,000 costumes used on stage over half a century which are now available to the public. There’s an Elizabethan-style dress with braided bodice worn by Glenda Jackson when she joined the company in 1964 and a pair of boots worn by Kenneth Branagh.
The costumes were previously only hired to other acting organisations.
But it seems there are some rather more unusal requests with one man asking if he could rent out David's unwashed socks! Nasty!
