Blackpool Worries For David Morrissey & David Tennant

The Walking Dead star David Morrissey has spoken about taking risks with his acting projects, citing the leap of faith that he and co-star David Tennant took when they appeared in innovative BBC musical drama Blackpool in 2004.

"I want to go into a job feeling a bit of frisson, thinking things MAY not work," he said in an interview published by the Huffington Post today.

David Morrissey played arcade owner Ripley Holden in the six part miniseries Blackpool which also starred Sarah Parish and Steve Pemberton. Holden’s plans for the expansion of his entertainments empire are turned upside down when the body of a young man is found in his arcade and the investigating police officer, Peter Carlisle (David Tennant) starts getting a little too close to his shady dealings and his family. The drama was unusual in that the action was punctuated by regular song and dance routines with the characters singing along to a backing track of pop songs ranging from Elvis Presley and Kenny Rogers to The Clash and The Smiths.

"I remember halfway through the shoot they showed us a bit of the dailies," says Morrissey, laughing at the memory. "Then me and David Tennant walked away and got in the lift and the doors closed. And we went, 'We're NEVER gonna work again!'"

Fortunately Blackpool was a hit with critics and audiences alike!

David Morrissey returns as The Governor for new episodes of The Walking Dead starting on AMC at 9pm EST this Sunday, and he hopes that the character will be around for a while in the hit zombie drama.
"Contractually, I'm there for five years,” he said, “But that's not to say that I don't die at the end of this season, Or whenever."
