Warning: this report contains spoilers for the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special
The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall visited the
Doctor Who set at Roath Lock in Cardiff
today where they met with various members of the cast and crew including
outgoing Doctor Matt Smith and Jenna Coleman who plays companion Clara. Also in
attendance were Steven Moffat, Nicholas Briggs and Dan Starkey.
The Royals were shown around the TARDIS set by Matt and
Jenna and had a go at operating the controls. The Prince also had a try of the
Doctor’s sonic screwdriver, and was encouraged by Dalek voice actor Nicholas
Briggs to provide vocal effects for the Doctor’s iconic enemy via a voice
modulator. The royal couple came face to face with Daleks, Cybermen, a Weeping
Angel, a Silence and the Sontaran Strax, played by Dan Starkey.
Matt Smith said of the Prince of Wales, “The Prince said he
had been watching Doctor Who since he was 15 and he knew all the lingo, he was
very interested. He knew about different Doctors, he knew about the 50th
anniversary coming up, he was familiar with the world of Doctor Who.
“He was a pilot so he knows how to fly, and he was very
interested in all the technical side of the Tardis.
“It’s wonderful to know he is a fan of the show - he is the
Prince of Wales and we film in Wales
so we like to make a virtue of that.”
Jenna Coleman was heard in conversation with the Prince
revealing a little information about filming the 50th Anniversary. In
a clip shown on the BBC Wales newsite she tells him:
“We finished about 2
months ago. We had three different Doctors here. And we shot in 3D as well.
Three Doctors: John Hurt, and David Tennant was back with Matt, so we had three
different Doctors playing against each other.”
That wasn't the only hint given out about the 50th
Anniversary Special and particularly the version of the Time Lord played by
John Hurt, as seen briefly at the end of the series climax, The Name Of The Doctor. While showing
the royal party a selection of costumes from the show, costume designer Howard
Burden said:
“There was a gap between Paul McGann playing the Doctor and
Christopher Eccleston, when we didn't see a regeneration, and John Hurt will
fit into that gap. He is a past Doctor, not a future Doctor.”
The 50th Anniversary special stars Matt Smith, David Tennant, John Hurt, Jenna Coleman, Billie Piper and Joanna Page and will be screened on
BBC One on Saturday 23rd November. Matt Smith will leave the show at
Christmas and the identity of the next Doctor is expected to be revealed in
August or September.
