Broadchurch star Simone McAullay has spoken to the Daily Telegraph in Australia about her role in the thrilling crime drama, her happiness at shooting in Dorset and the huge draw of her co-stars. The eight part series which was created by Chris Chibnall (Doctor Who, Torchwood) and which stars David Tennant and Olivia Colman debuts next week in Australia.
From the Daily Telegraph
WHEN Simone McAullay was asked to star in acclaimed British
crime thriller series Broadchurch, spending five months filming in Dorset was like going home - despite the fact she's
Australian.
The actor, who played Senior Constable Susie Raynor in Blue
Heelers from 2003 to 2006, says she spent two years living in Cornwall with a
boyfriend.
"I met him in Byron
Bay and followed him to the UK ,"
she says.
"When this job came through I said to my agent, 'They
are filming in Dorset . I have to get that
job'. I really felt like I was coming home."
Broadchurch premieres on ABC1 on Friday night, after
proving a hit in Britain
earlier this year, pulling in an audience of 8.4 million for its final episode.
Starring David Tennant (Doctor Who) and Olivia Colman (Rev), it
revolves around the death of a young boy, and how the investigation into his
murder blows a small community apart.
McAullay plays Becca Fisher, a struggling Australian who has
taken over the local hotel and who hides some secrets of her own.
The subject matter is dark, but McAullay believes Australian
audiences will be drawn in.
"David and Olivia are so well-known in the UK
people would watch David read the phone book. I don't know if it will have that
same pull in Australia ,
but I think if people start watching it and get on board with it they will
stick with it," she says.
"It's not a sunny drama, but even though it is dark it
also has a lot of heart and soul. If you can get on board with that it's very
compelling."
Watch Broadchurch on ABC1 in Australia starting on Friday 12th July at 8.30pm
