Peter Capaldi Named As The Twelfth Doctor

Peter Capaldi has been named as the Twelfth Doctor tonight. The announcement was made on a live show on BBC One which was simulcast in the USA, Canada and Australia.

Peter Capaldi is a well known face from TV, film and stage. Born in Glasgow, he attended the Glasgow School of Art. His big break was as Danny in the quirky British film Local Hero. Since then he has appeared in numerous roles, including The Crow Road, Skins and The Thick Of It and his own spoof documentary Cricklewood Greats. He recently appeared on stage as Professor Marcus in Graham Linehan's adaptation of The Ladykillers.

Peter is no stranger to the world of Doctor Who. A lifelong fan, he appeared opposite David Tennant as Caecilius in the 2008 episode The Fires Of Pompeii. He also appeared as John Frobisher in the Doctor Who spin off Torchwood: Children Of Earth.

Peter will take over the role when Matt Smith's Doctor regenerates during the Christmas Day episode.

Peter Capaldi says: “Being asked to play The Doctor is an amazing privilege. Like the Doctor himself I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight. I can't wait to get started."

Steven Moffat, lead writer and executive producer says : “It's an incendiary combination: one of the most talented actors of his generation is about to play the best part on television. Peter Capaldi is in the TARDIS!”

Doctor Who companion, Jenna Coleman says "I'm so excited Peter Capaldi is the man taking on the challenge of becoming the Twelfth Doctor. With Steven's writing and his talent I know we'll be making an amazing show with an incredible incarnation of number 12. I can't wait to start this new adventure!"

Congratulations Peter, and good luck from all of us!
