ITV say:
Prepare for another fun-filled romp through the archives as Robert Webb reveals the television debuts of some of Britain’s best-loved actors and actresses, presenters and pop stars in You Saw Them Here First.
Before getting their big breaks, many of today’s pop sensations had graced our television screens as young hopefuls trying to make their stamp on the music industry.
Years before singing at the 2012 Olympics, Emile Sande performed on Trevor Nelson’s Lowdown using her real name Adele. At just 16, and sporting long curly brown locks rather than her trademark blonde quiff, the singer was a runner up in Trevor’s urban talent search. Other classic clips featuring well-known pop stars include: Aston Merrygold performing as a young Michael Jackson on Stars In Their Eyes; a ten-year-old Cheryl Cole ballroom dancing; Claire from Steps in girl group TSD performing with Mr Motivator; and Jessica Cornish, now better known as Jessie J, trying to prove she’s one of Britain’s Brilliant Prodigies.
You Saw Them Here First reveals screen legend Patrick Stewart’s first ever television appearance as a fireman in a 1960s episode of Coronation Street. There’s also a clip of Russell Crowe as a child in Australian soap The Young Doctors, Sir Michael Caine as a medieval solider, along with television debuts from Hollywood greats Sir Ian McKellen, Sir Derek Jacobi, Ewan McGregor and Emily Blunt.
When it comes to TV firsts, this episode is packed with cringe-worthy debuts. In the video booth, Janet Street Porter is presented with clips she’ll never forget even if she would rather – from being hoisted in the air by muscleman Arnold Schwarzenegger to testing gadgets for picking up dog foul. Broadcasting legend Chris Tarrant comes face to face with his younger self on a local news item where he spoke to a man walking 13 miles with ferrets down his trousers, we see Ant and Dec’s presenting debut and Rob Brydon hosting a 1980s Welsh game show.
Game show fans have much more to enjoy in this episode, including Simon Cowell on Sale of the Century, Amanda Holden as a contestant on Blind Date, Olly Murs trying to beat the banker on Deal or No Deal and Paddy McGuiness wearing just his boxer shorts on God’s Gift.
Simon Cowell turns up again in a 1980s episode of Right to Reply, making sure his opinion is heard, Louis Walsh was judging talent thirty years ago, and Craig Revel Horwood is shown as an early 90s backing dancer.
Kings and queens of British comedy serve up some unintentionally funny moments as we’re given clips including Ricky Gervais fronting 1980s New Wave band Seona Dancing, Russell Brand being arrested on The Bill and Catherine Tate blazing a trail in a succession of infernos in London’s Burning. There are also formative comedy offerings from Jack Dee, Frankie Boyle, Eddie Izzard and Sarah Millican.
Also in this episode: Jude Law offers to muck out the stables before dressing as a woman to try and fool Sherlock Holmes; David Tennant is on the wrong side of the law in The Bill, Duncan Bannatyne tries out his acting skills playing a night club owner; Colin Firth is an early 1980s copper, Helen Mirren stars in a documentary about herself in ‘Doing Her Own Thing’; plus debut television clips of Lesley Sharp, David Suchet, Phillip Schofield and many more.
