David Tennant and Rosamund Pike have spoken separately about the very special contribution that their young co-stars make to their new film What We Did On Our Holiday.
Rosamund Pike has told Baz Bamigboye of The Mail that working with her three young actors on the new BBC Films comedy feature was 'humbling'.
Rosamund plays Abi McLeod in the film who, with estranged husband Doug (David Tennant) are parents to three astute children played by Emilia Jones (12), Bobby Smalldridge (9) and Harriet Turnbull (6). Rosamund said of the children's on set skills,
"There’s something so spontaneous, so direct and so fresh
about them. They just get on with it, while we make such a meal of it."
What We Did On Our Holiday is the creation of award-winning comedy writing duo Guy Jenkin and Andy Hamilton, the team behind Outnumbered and it uses the same semi-improvised techniques to coax natural performances out of its young stars as the BBC sitcom. David Tennant has said that the improvisation is just one of the ingredients that makes the film so great, but is certainly the one that makes it stand out.
"If you took all the improvisation out, you would still have a very funny, well-structured and well-written film," he said. "These are extra moments that add verity and also lots of humour. Often in the film you see children being children in a very real way, which is funny, refreshing and glorious."
What We Did On Our Holiday follows a family going through an acrimonious divorce as they attempt to put their differences aside temporarily to go on a summer trip to Scotland to celebrate a family birthday. The film also stars Billy Connolly, Ben Miller, Celia Imrie, Amelia Bullmore and Annette Crosbie. It goes on general release in the UK on Friday 26th September.
