Joe Sims On Broadchurch: "A Dream Come True" - And The Series 2 Casting Of His Mum!

Broadchurch star Joe Sims has told the Bristol Post that working on the award winning ITV series felt like a reward for all the tough times he'd had as a struggling actor.

“Imagine walking in for the read through and seeing David Tennant, Pauline Quirke, Olivia Colman, Jodie Whittaker, and Andrew Buchan. It was like a Who’s Who of who is at the top of their game in the television world - a dream come true,” Bristolian Joe told his local paper. “Walking in and seeing them felt like utter vindication for having gone though all I had, and for all those times I had doubted myself. I was there, not as a fan, but as someone who had been chosen to be there. It was a fantastic experience and one I shall remember for the rest of my life.”

Joe has been back on location with the Broadchurch cast and crew for the second series, currently in production for broadcast early next year. Though sworn to secrecy, Joe says that series creator Chris Chibnall has nailed it yet again with his new scripts. “There are so many twists and turns,” he said.

Joe was also able to reveal that his mum Anne, who appeared briefly in series 1 as the mother of his character Nige Carter, will be returning for scenes in series 2. "She was in the first series and is back by popular demand,” he claimed. "Pauline Quirke plays my real mum in the first series and my mum plays my adopted mum in the second.”

He expects that Anne will soon be rubbing shoulders with her famous co-stars again, and making as much of an impression on them as she did last time round. She was a hit with David Tennant, with whom she travelled by car to the set.

"Blimey, he turned on the charm factor with her!" Joe said. "He asked how old she was and when she said 56 he said, 'you don't look that old.' I thought her head was going to pop off her neck she was so excited. She was absolutely giddy.”
David wasn’t the only one enamoured of Joe’s mum "She's best mates with Olivia now. Mum saw her getting out of a car and gave her a big hug saying there's my co-star. I got hold of a brilliant picture of them together and had it blown up and put on a canvas which Olivia signed, 'To Anne, Happy Christmas to the best actor in the Sims family'!"

Joe will next be seen in the upcoming ITV drama The Lost Honour of Christopher Jefferies. Based on the shocking murder of Jo Yeates in Bristol, the drama explores the wrongful accusations and vilification by the press of her neighbour, Mr. Jefferies. Joe plays Vincent Tabak, the man eventually convicted of the murder. The drama will air later this year.

The sequel to the multi-Bafta winning series Broadchurch, written by Chris Chibnall and produced by Kudos and Imaginary Friends for ITV is currently filming in various locations in Dorest, Somerset and Berkshire. The series sees the return of David Tennant, Olivia Colman, Andrew Buchan Jodie Whittaker and Arthur Darvill, with new faces including Charlotte Rampling, Eve Myles and Marianne Jean-Baptiste.
