BROADCHURCH: Opening Episode Ratings Smash Series 1 Debut



As anticipated, the new series of Broadchurch starring David Tennant and Olivia Colman was the big ratings winner on UK television last night. The first episode of the returning drama was watched by 7.6 million viewers, easily ahead of all other shows in the 9pm slot, with a 30.1% audience share.

The viewer numbers were up on the timeslot average of 5.2m / 22.9% share.

Broadchurch made its debut in March 2013 to 6.8m viewers (28.1% share); last night saw an additional 800,000 viewers tuning in to watch the explosive opening. 

Other shows in the same timeslot were the first of a new series of The Undateables on Channel 4 (2.4m / 9.6%), Channel 5 documentary Benefits: Too Fat To Work (1.7m / 6.7%), and BBC Two's Rich Russian And Living In London (1.3m / 5.2%). BBC One ran the AFC Wimbledon v. Liverpool FA Cup tie, which averaged 5.6m / 22.9% between 7.30-10pm.

Broadchurch continues on ITV on Monday 12th January at 9pm GMT.
