David Tennant Wins Best Actor In A Play Award For Richard II

There was more awards success for David Tennant tonight when he picked up the Best Actor In A Play prize in the 15th annual WhatsOnStage Awards. David was nominated for his persormance in the 2013-14 Royal Shakespeare Company Production of Richard II.

David who had returned to London from the New York shoot of A.K.A. Jessica Jones just in time to attend tonight's event namechecked the hair extensions he wore for the role during his acceptance speech and revealed that as a student he saw Derek Jacobi perform Richard II and assaulted him for an autograph. He also spoke out about the importance of UK theatre and the need to continue to invest in the arts as a whole.

"British theatre has this amazing knack of reinventing itself and staying the best in the world year after year," he said. "If I may say so in an election year, any money spent in the arts industry is not an expense but an investment."

Richard II was nominated as Best Play Revival but lost out to the Donmar Warehouse production of Coriolanus starring Tom Hiddleston.

The WhatsOnStage Awards are the only major theatre awards wholly decided on the votes of theatre goers, from initial nominations to final winners.
