Broadchurch creator Chris Chibnall today announced the consolidated viewing figures for the final episode of Broadchurch which aired on Monday 23rd February. The audience figure, including catch up viewings from PVR services but which, he says, does not yet include totals from ITV Player, currently stands at 9.92 million viewers. The finale of series one two years ago was watched by a total of 10.5 million.
Chris also points out that the series average has only been slightly down on series one. Average consolidated figures have been 9.2 million (30.5% audience share). The 2013 average was 9.37m (31.4% share), only 170,000 higher.
The second series of Broadchurch was hit by relentless criticism from certain sections of the press, including claims that viewers had abandoned the drama. The consolidated figures confirm that while audiences were not necessarily watching live they were still very much loyal to the show.
ITV announced that there is to be a third series of Broaodchurch with David Tennant and Olivia Colman returning to the roles of Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller.
Broadcasts of the second series begin in the USA and South Africa from tomorrow.
