DAVID TENNANT REVIEW OF 2015: January - Broadchurch, the NTAs & A New Project Is Announced

It's time for our annual review of David Tennant's year. Over the next couple of weeks we'll be taking a month-by-month look back at some of the best memories of 2015.

TV

As the new year opened TV viewers worldwide were eagerly anticipating the second series of the award winning Broadchurch. Shrouded in secrecy, very little was revealed about the new series. Teaser trailers questioned why Alec Hardy and Ellie Miller were still in Broadchurch, and it was theorised that the plot would tackle the trial of Danny’s killer. New promo photos revealed new cast members, including Eve Myles, James D’Arcy and Charlotte Rampling, and introduced the motif of the bluebell. In an interview David revealed that he had been hooked by the plot. The series returned in the UK and Ireland on January 5th, rolling out to other countries around the world over the next few months. Meanwhile, a tie-in series of 8 original short stories was launched, written by Erin Kelly, author of the first series novelisation, released one at a time following each episode. In spite of some negative press and competition from other stations, the series was received enthusiastically and consolidated audience figures showed that it was as popular as ever.

David appeared with Olivia Colman on The Graham Norton Show on January 16th to promote Broadchurch. During the interview they discussed keeping secrets and checked out some steamy fan art

David was announced as the narrator of Pets: Wild At Heart – the latest animal documentary from John Downer Productions. The 2-part series began on BBC One on January 21st

In spite of the probable cancellation of the show, David’s fans voted him the winner of the People’s Choice Award for Favorite Actor In A New TV Series for his performance as Emmett Carver in Gracepoint

Radio

David appeared on the Matt Edmondson Show on Radio 1  and on BBC Radio 4 Front Row. He also returned to Absolute Radio on January 12th to co-host the Breakfast Show with Christian O’Connell, when he provided lyrics, in character as DI Hardy, to the Broadchurch theme. David hinted that he had a top secret new project in the pipeline, which was of course…

Marvel’s Jessica Jones

It was announced that David would play supervillain Kilgrave in the new Netflix series Marvel’s Jessica Jones (then known as AKA Jessica Jones). The series was adapted from the comics series Alias by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos and adapted by Melissa Rosenberg. Krysten Ritter (Breaking Bad) would be playing the titular Jessica, and the series would film in New York during the spring and early summer of 2015. Also announced were Mike Colter as Luke Cage and Rachael Taylor as Trish Walker.

National Television Awards

On January 21st, David went to the NTAs to present an award with his Broadchurch co-star Olivia Colman. What he didn’t realise was that he was about to be presented with a Special Recognition Award and his family and friends had been working secretly behind his back to produce a tribute video. Many of David’s former colleagues contributed to the video, including Billie Piper, Catherine Tate and Richard Wilson and, most movingly for David, his father, Sandy McDonald.

Film

What We Did On Our Holiday starring David alongside Billy Connolly and Rosamund Pike was released on DVD in the UK.

Radio Times

David attended the Radio Times Covers party where he was presented with a special award of his 25 covers. Only the Queen has more cover appearances than he does now!

Charity

David was one of a number of celebrities promoting Comic Relief’s Make Your Face Funny For Money campaign, He said of the fundraiser: “I’ll be supporting Red Nose Day once again and this time I’ll be making my face funny. It’s got to be one of the most simple but fun ways to raise money yet. Money that will help people both in the UK and Africa.”

Check back tomorrow as we take a look at the news from February 2015.
