Third Series Of W1A Is On The Way Says Writer At RTS Event

A third series of the award winning comedy show W1A is now being written, according to the production team. The show's writer and producer were talking about the show at a special event in London tonight.

The spoof fly-on-the-wall documentary is narrated by David Tennant and follows a fictional BBC management team played by, among others, Hugh Bonneville, Sarah Parish, Jason Watkins, Jessica Hynes and Nina Sosanya. The series was developed as a follow up to the London Olympics comedy Twenty Twelve in order to continue the professional journey of some of the characters.

Writer and director John Morton and executive producer Jon Plowman were in conversation this evening at the ITV London Studios for W1A - The Story Behind The Scenes, an event hosted by the Royal Television Society. Talking about the quality of the show's writing, Plowman confirmed that despite the dialogue appearing naturalistic, the lines were actually all scripted and precisely directed by Morton.

"John writes every word," he said "It's never improvised. Every comma, every pause."

In turn, John Morton praised David Tennant's contribution to the BBC Two series, saying that his voiceover was a useful piece of architecture for sticking the documentary-type show together. Although David has not been confirmed as the narrator for series 3, Morton reassured viewers that it was not an issue if he was off filming for another project when the time came to record.

"David Tennant has never been in the same country when he's recording the voiceover," he said. "For the last series he was in New York."

If you need to catch up on the first two series of W1A, they are both available on a BBC DVD box set here
