BROADCHURCH: Series 3 Casting Confirmations - New & Returning Cast

Next month filming starts on the third and final series of Broadchurch, with David Tennant and Olivia Colman already confirmed to return in the roles of Alec Hardy and Olivia Colman.

Also back, it is confirmed today, are Andrew Buchan and Jodie Whittaker, as Mark and Beth Latimer, whose son Danny was the victim of a shocking murder committed by one of the family's closest friends. Arthur Darvill also reprises the role of local vicar Paul Coates. You will also see Carolyn Pickles back as newspaper editor Maggie Radcliffe, and Adam Wilson as Ellie's son Tom.

In addition there are already some exciting new names in place. Julie Hesmondhalgh, beloved to many as Coronation Street's Hayley Cropper has signed on, as has Fast Show creator and star Charlie Higson. Also among the cast are Georgina Campbell (Murdered By My Boyfriend, After Hours) and Mark Bazeley (Home Fires), while David Tennant will be reunited with his Blackpool and Recovery co-star Sarah Parish.

The new series has a new team of directors too in Paul Andrew Williams (Murdered by My Boyfriend), Daniel Nettheim (Humans) and Lewis Arnold (Banana).

Series three will see a brand new storyline as Hardy and Miller are reunited to investigate a serious sexual assault. The programme makers spent a year researching with Dorset-based organisations who specialise in dealing with victims of sexual assault, and police advisors who specialise in investigating crimes of sexual violence. Chris Chibnall has received advice from two of Dorset's specialist sexual assault advice and support agencies throughout the writing process. Broadchurch’s final chapter looks at the emotional cost to all of those involved and the irreparable damage to friendships and relationships.

Filming begins on series three of Broadchurch in Bridport, West Bay and Clevedon in May. The programme will be produced by Dan Winch and executive produced by Chris Chibnall of Imaginary Friends and Jane Featherstone of Sister Pictures. Broadchurch is co-produced by Kudos with ITV.

Broadchurch writer and creator Chris Chibnall, who will soon be taking over as the new Doctor Who showrunner, said, ""This is the final chapter of Broadchurch. We have one last story to tell, featuring both familiar faces and new characters. I hope it's a compelling and emotional farewell to a world and show that means so much to me."

Jane Featherstone said, “We will return to the town and characters we know so well as they find themselves caught up in a new and compelling story which will test the strength of the community and the people who live there, and will, I hope, be a fitting end to this trilogy.”

The series is expected to premiere on ITV early in 2017.
