David Tennant Plays Richard II For 100th Time Tonight



Tonight's performance of the Royal Shakespeare Company's Richard II starring David Tennant in the titular role is his 100th performance of the play.

The play first debuted at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon back on 10th October 2013.
The 13th November 2013 saw David make history as his performance was recorded live at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and simultaneously screened into over 100 cinemas around the country, with screenings also in North America, Australia, Japan and Northern Europe. It took over £1 million for it's first screening.
On 15th November it was streamed into 1000 schools across the UK with a live Q&A with David and Director Greg Doran following the show.

The show closed in Stratford-upon-Avon on 16th November and transferred to the Barbican in London on 9th December 2013. It closed it's first run on 25th January 2014.

The DVD and Blu-Ray of the live recording were released in May 2014.

In February 2015 David was presented with the award for Best Actor In A Play for the role at the annual What's On Stage Awards. The play itself was nominated for Best Play Revival for it's run at the Barbican at the same ceremony. It;s Stratford-upon-Avon run was nominated for Best Regional Production at the 2014 What's On Stage Awards.

In January 2016 David reprised the role at the Barbican in London for just 9 shows as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company's King And Country Cycle to mark 400 years since the death of William Shakespeare.

On 24th March David made his made his US theatrical debut at BAM Harvey Theater when the King And Country cycle transferred to New York. It is at this venue that David will play his 100th performance of the role tonight.

His last performance as Richard II in New York will be on Friday 29th April.
