A video of David Tennant's Q&A with BroadwayWorld's Richard Ridge for the SAG-AFTRA Foundation's Conversation series has now been posted online.
During the interview which took place in New York on Wednesday, David talks about his 27 year career, playing Richard II in the USA, bad theatre, his early love of performing, his 20 year career with the RSC and playing the Tenth Doctor, Hamlet, Barty Crouch Jr. and Kilgrave.
On his New York theatre debut:
“I’m just glad to get through it. Just glad to get from
start to finish without forgetting anything and falling over, basically!”
On performing in New York:
“There’s definitely a frisson about coming to New York
which, along with London is the town for theatre.”
On the brilliance of Shakespeare’s writing in Richard II
“It’s such an interesting part because he’s such a twat! And
yet by somewhere around the interval, Shakespeare just by a sleight of hand
makes you start feeling for him and completely reverses the whole sympathies of
the audience. “
On how it feels to be known worldwide for Doctor Who:
“It’s amazing! It’s amazing to be associated with something
that people love so much. It’s fantastic! It’s such a privilege, it really is.”
On playing Hamlet:
“It was wonderful. It was one of the most formative
experiences of my life without a doubt. There is no other part like it.”
On Jessica Jones villain Kilgrave:
“This extraordinary character who’s got so much going on,
who’s got the most extraordinary superpower there’s ever been and just chooses
to use it to have a really good time.”
The best advice he’s ever been given:
“Be nice. Say thank you. Be a human being”
