Writer Jane Rogers On David Tennant: "A Radio Producer's Dream"

Novelist and scriptwriter Jane Rogers has praised David Tennant ahead of the broadcast on BBC Radio 4 of her latest projects. Jane has dramatised two novellas by Robert Louis Stevenson taken from South Sea Tales, a collection of stories written by the classic author during his travels in the region and his subsequent settling in Samoa. David will star in one of the dramatisations and narrate the other which will be broadcast as a two-part series, Terror In The South Seas.

The first of these productions, as we announced last week, will be The Beach Of Falesa. David Tennant plays Wiltshire, a trader recently arrived in Samoa who marries a local girl, only to find himself tabooed by the other inhabitants. The dramatisation will be broadcast on Sunday 4th December at 3pm GMT on BBC Radio 4. The second, which David will narrate, will air the following week; details will be revealed in the next few days.

Talking to the Banbury Guardian ahead of the town's Literary Live Festival, Jane said of David: “The casts of both plays are excellent but David is a radio producer’s dream. He can read pages of narration without a single hesitation or fluff, and he brings the text vividly to life. Plus, he’s incredibly modest and funny.”

The Stevenson adaptations are not the first time that David and Jane have collaborated. Back in 2002, David played Calum in Jane Roger's adaptation of her own novel Island, an unsettling tale of a murderous
young woman meeting the brother that she never knew existed.
