Mad To Be Normal Preview Screenings Begin In Glasgow Today

Preview screenings of the new David Tennant feature Mad To Be Normal begin at the Glasgow Film Theatre today. The film premiered at the venue on February 26th as the closing gala of this year’s Glasgow Film Festival. The exclusive previews run from today until Thursday 30th March ahead of the film’s national release on Thursday 6th April.

In addition, the screening on Sunday 26th March at 4.20pm includes a 30-minute panel discussion hosted by Richard Warden (Film Lead, Mental Health Foundation).

Mad To Be Normal is based on the life of maverick psychiatrist R.D. Laing and his controversial 1960s experiment at Kingsley Hall in London where he set up a medication-free community in which people experiencing severe schizophrenia lived alongside medical practitioners and support workers as equals. It stars David Tennant as Laing, with Elisabeth Moss, Michael Gambon and Gabriel Byrne also among the cast.
There was no more charismatic or controversial a figure during the swinging ‘60s than Scottish psychiatrist R D Laing. Dubbed “the white Martin Luther King” and the “high priest of anti-psychiatry”, Laing was as famous as Dylan. His methods flew in the face of a medical establishment that considered Laing a dangerous radical. Mad to Be Normal offers a powerful account of Laing’s Kingsley Hall experiment with a stunning performance from David Tennant that truly gets under the skin of an utterly compelling figure.
