AWARDS: David Tennant Wins Acting Award For Mad To Be Normal

The Newport Beach Film Festival wrapped up last night with the announcement of the winners of the 2017 Festival Awards. Overall, the California-based festival was attended by over 50,000 visitors and screened over 350 films from 58 countries, which competed for Jury, Festival Honours and Audience Awards.

David Tennant was among those receiving Festival Honours, being recognised for Outstanding Achievement In Filmmaking: Acting for his role as the 1960s psychiatrist RD Laing in the new movie Mad To Be Normal. Mad To Be Normal, written and directed by Robert Mullan, is based on Laing's life during the late 1960s when he set up the controversial anti-psychiatry project at Kingsley Hall in East London. Laing advocated a non-confrontational approach to mental illness and his project encouraged patients experiencing severe mental illness to work through their psychosis while living in the medication-free community as equals with medical practitioners.

Mad To Be Normal also stars Elisabeth Moss, Michael Gambon and Gabriel Byrne. The screening at the Newport Beach Film Festival on April 21st was the film's US premiere.
