IRISH PREMIERE: Mad To Be Normal Screens At Galway Film Fleadh Tonight

Mad To Be Normal makes its Irish premiere this evening at the Galway Film Fleadh from 7.15pm. The sold-out screening at Cinemobile will be attended by the film’s writer and director, Robert Mullan. Mad To Be Normal is screening in competition in the World Cinema category.

David Tennant gives a stand out performance as revolutionary Scottish psychiatrist R.D. Laing in the new movie based on Laing's controversial treatment methods. In the late 1960s, Laing set up a medication-free facility in Kingsley Hall in London where patients and mental health practitioners lived together as equals and where Laing trialled various daring treatments on people who were diagnosed as mentally disturbed. His revolutionary methods involved experimenting with LSD on his patients and practicing a form of self-healing known as metanoia. His practices caused outrage and controversy in the medical profession but also facilitated the radical change in attitudes to and perceptions of mental health around the world.

Mad To Be Normal also stars Elisabeth Moss, Michael Gambon and Gabriel Byrne. The movie was produced by Phin Glynn, Alan Latham and Charlotte Arden.

The Galway Film Fleadh was founded in 1989 and aims to showcase the best of Irish and international cinema. This year's event runs from 11th-16th July in venues around Galway city.
