CAMPING: Character Synopses For New David Tennant Comedy
The HBO limited comedy series Camping begins production in Los Angeles very soon, with David Tennant set to play the role of henpecked husband Walt. The show is scripted by Lena Dunham and Jenni Konner, based on the UK sitcom of the same name created by Julia Davis, and the pair will also act as showrunners for the US adaptation. Since Camping was initially announced last month, the cast has filled out, and more information about the characters has been revealed.
Jennifer Garner leads the cast as Kathryn Siddell-Bauers, an obsessively organised and controlling LA mum who is far less fun than her Lululemons imply.
David Tennant plays Walt, Kathryn's obedient husband and father to her children, around whose birthday celebrations the story revolves. He's the reliable lynchpin of his family and social group, but he's starting to harbour a growing resentment.
Juliet Lewis plays Jandice, a woman of many talents: a DJ of sick beats, a reiki healer and a certified public accountant. Her life may seem ideal - bouncing from man to man to woman to man - but the reality is far less idyllic.
Janicza Bravo plays Nina-Joy, the chicer-than-all lifestyle queen who is the best at everything. She's the friend you go to for everything: best massage, best jeans, best oatmeal. But her tension with Kathryn over a breach of confidence threatens to topple the weekend and put tooth marks in her marriage to the husband she adores almost as much as she likes a nice clog boot.
Arturo Del Puerto plays Miguel, who is in the middle of a midlife crisis and recently separated. He is now expressing his instability through Topshop clothing and very strange life choices.
Brett Gelman plays the loyal, goofy and game George, Walt's best friend with whom he’s as obsessed as he is with his wife, Nina-Joy. But just under the surface there simmers some barely repressed rage that can stop any singalong.
Ione Skye as Carleen, Kathryn's meek sister who has spent her life in her shadow, as a hospice worker and as an unsuccessful equestrian. She's permanently terrified and relies on her own strange passions, such as crocheting with polyester yarn, to get her through the lonely days.
Bridget Everett plays Harry, the tough-talking, nature-loving queen of the campsite who came out as a lesbian at age 3. Her passion for her wife Nan is only beaten by her passion for all other women and an assortment of guns.
Camping centres on a delightful weekend expedition to get back to nature and mark Walt's 45th birthday. But when the camping trip gathers Kathryn’s meek sister, holier than thou ex-best friend and a free-spirited tagalong in one place, it becomes a weekend of tested marriages and woman-on-woman crime that won’t soon be forgotten. Plus, bears.
Camping is expected to debut in the 2018-19 pilot season on HBO. As yet there is no information available about plans to broadcast the show in other countries.
