GOOD OMENS: The "Odd Couple Out To Save The World" - David Tennant On Crowley & Aziraphale
David Tennant has been taking to Newsweek about his role in the upcoming Amazon Prime show Good Omens, an adaptation of the much loved comic novel by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. The six-part series will premiere worldwide on the streaming service early in 2019 before airing on BBC Two and, it is hoped, on TV networks elsewhere.
David plays Crowley, a demon from Hell who has been living among humans on Earth since The Beginning, alongside his heavenly counterpart, the angel Aziraphale (Michael Sheen). The pair have associated for so long that they have struck up a loose alliance, so when the issue of the impending Apocalypse threatens the rather comfortable lifestyles they have each been living, they join forces to prevent the destruction of all that they hold dear.
"They complete each other rather well," David said of the pairing. "Aziraphale is fussy and prim, and Crowley is loose and anarchic. Together they become this odd couple who are out to save the world from the apocalypse."
Before he was cast in the role of Crowley, David was unfamiliar with the novel but has since been made aware of its cult following and the love that fans have for the characters - no pressure, then, to get his portrayal of 'Hell's most approachable demon' just right!
"I was unprepared for the fanbase of Good Omens," he admitted. "Obviously I knew that Neil and Terry had huge followings. But people started telling me how much the book meant to them—that they reread it every year of their life, that these characters have lived in their imagination forever. That can be a bit nerve-wracking because you suddenly realize the potential for destroying peoples’ fantasy of these characters. You might be the person that shatters the dream!"
However, David assured fans that while the adaptation of the novel would not be a slavish one, it would be very loyal and reminded fans that the production had been in very good hands. "Because we had Neil Gaiman himself as the showrunner," he said, "It felt like we're very much in the spirit of that story and that world."
"It’s hard to imagine what it’s going to be like - so much will happen in post-production, " he added. "And there are many other storylines that my character didn’t get involved in—it’s going to be a wonderful, sprawling crazy show."
Good Omens the TV series was scripted by Neil Gaiman and directed by Douglas Mackinnon. Other cast members include Miranda Richardson, Adria Arjona, Jack Whitehall, Michael McKean, Josie Lawrence and John Hamm. The seies is a co-production between Amazon Prime, BBC Studios, The Blank Corporation and Narrativia.
